There is something truly special about working with a couple capturing the most important moments in their lives. Kelli and Nino came to me 10 years ago for their engagement photos, now this amazing, kind and gorgeous couple have four beautiful boys! In between those 10 years we have captured the wedding, maternity photos, welcome home sessions, christenings, holy communions and birthdays.
This year we visited their happy place, their stunning East Hampton summer home to capture a day in their lives and to celebrate their littlest one's first birthday (you have to see his party hat!). As a mom myself I have found that some practical ways to capture those important moments that allow for all the warmth and joy to show. My first rule is always fun! I tell my couples to plan something that the family enjoys like a trip to the beach and I allow time for play. When I show up to the house now I get hugs and smiles from the boys and that just makes my day!
The next thing is to think about realities of family life like when nap time is and feeding hungry bellies. No one smiles on an empty stomach. So sometimes I'll start with a little mini portrait session at the home and then take a bit of a break so the kids can eat, nap, run off some energy. Than we come back for the next mini session at the beach, park or backyard. I've found that these simple tips make the day enjoyable for all involved and cut down unnecessary stress. Photos should be fun and when you look back on them they should bring back those joyful moments.
